The Shannon Trust

Soon after my oldest children were learning to read, I helped establish the Shannon Trust, which gets prison inmates teaching each other to read. It makes good use of the time they have and I am confident it helps prevent the inmates from committing further crimes.

The amazing thing we found was that many inmates were learning to read in just 5-6 months, after years of struggle as a child. That is faster than most people with no difficulty.

So in 2001 I began researching the issue in depth, confident that there would be a new solution to discover, despite the last 200 years of failure using conventional approaches. Our research was based on two elements:

  1. Understand why each child has found it hard
  2. Find a new path for each child that resonates with the huge natural strengths of every child’s intelligence

The outcome has been that we can now guarantee to help any child see good progress, if they are showing the patterns we are familiar with. We have not had a single child this year who has not seen significant progress after the first 90 lessons.

Step 1: Understand the Solution for Your Child

What would you say is the skill you would most like in your doctor: brilliant diagnosis or brilliant knowledge of cures? For me it is diagnosis. If a doctor knows what the problem is she can always find the best treatment. In the same way we focus a lot on really understanding the underlying neural mechanisms that cause difficulty for each child.

Those mechanisms vary a lot and they each have different patterns. Have you seen any of these symptoms?

  • Guessing of short, common words when reading
  • Atrocious spelling, despite lots of practice
  • Comprehension well below your child’s potential

They are some of the very common patterns that we have studied for years. They each give us a clear indication of why a child has been struggling. For instance, the guessing is a sign of someone trying to memorise whole words, rather than decoding them. So they recognise some words, work out some words from the context and guess the rest. The short words are often harder for them than the long words because it is harder to work them out from the context.

My sons were great guessers because they are both very visual learners. One is now a car designer and the other is an engineer. If you have a bright visual learner, then you may easily see the same pattern.
